John honoured for service to Coffs Harbour Parish

by Barry de Silva

Recently, former Coffs Harbour Parish Business manager, John Walker, was awarded a Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal, for his services to the St Augustine’s Parish and the wider Diocese.

Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, translated from Latin means ‘For the Church and the Pope’. It was established in 1888 by Pope Leo XIII and is the highest commendation from the Holy Father to members of clergy and laity for their services to the Catholic Church.

For over 20 years John has been involved in the Coffs Harbour Parish. In his time as Parish Business Manager, John went above and beyond for parishioners, often providing compassionate support in times of need. He was there to listen to their worries, give practical assistance, and support in finding emergency housing.

In addition, John was instrumental in the creation of the Parish’s Out of School Hours Care service and has provided invaluable expertise to the Parish Schools Office on many occasions. As a regular mass attendee, John has always been present at Parish events, and has been happy to cook, clean, and do what is needed to help ensure Parish activities run smoothly.

Bishop Greg Homeming presented John with the award at an intimate ceremony at the Coffs Harbour Parish, which was attended by his wife, Jenny.

“John has embodied the spirit of the St Augustine’s Parish through his actions and dedication to the Church – he has been a pillar of the Coffs Harbour community,” Bishop Greg said.

“This honour expresses our deep appreciation for the good work he has done across our Diocese, and the profound impact he has had on people’s lives.”
