INTERNATIONAL EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS QUEBEC, CANADA 15th to 22nd JUNE, 2008. Every four years an International Eucharistic Congress takes place in a city designated by the Holy Father. The 49th such gathering is scheduled for Quebec, Canada, from 15th to 22nd June this year. These Congresses are extraordinary events in the life of the Universal Church, bringing together large numbers of Catholic people and pastors from throughout the world in week-long celebrations of devotion to Jesus Christ in the Blessed Eucharist. As the pastoral commitments of the Holy Father, in for example the United States and Australia will prevent the customary presiding presence of the Pope on this occasion, a Papal Legate will lead this year’s Congress. It remains desirable and appropriate, however, that there be a notable contingent of pilgrims from Australia, even though World Youth Day in July is our first priority. People who wish to participate in the Quebec International Eucharistic Congress are welcome to contact Bishop Dougherty, the appointed Delegate of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference, to arrange registration (P.O. Box 246, Bathurst 2795), phone 02 6331 3611, fax 02 6331 9453, email email@example.com; fee for necessary registration ($Can 230 = $Aus 250 approx.) includes ‘access to all the activities offered during the Congress, free local transportation during the event (on specific routes), lunch each day except Sunday 15th June and Sunday 22nd June, simultaneous translation with an FM receiver, and access to a specially reserved section for the closing ceremony’. One option for pilgrims is participation in the by-air pilgrim journey made available by Harvest Pilgrimages (phone 02 9390 5460, fax 02 9390 5480, Level 11, Polding Centre, 133 Liverpool Street, Sydney 2000) departing from Sydney on Wednesday 11th June, and reaching Quebec via Toronto and Montreal on Sunday 15th June, and with an immediate post-Congress return by Wednesday 25th June, or optionally via Mexico City and Guadelupe, by Friday 28th June. People interested in this initiative are asked to contact Harvest Pilgrimages.
