Death of Father John Naylor

Bishop of the Diocese, the Most Reverend Geoffrey Jarrett, has announced the death of Father John Naylor.
 
In a statement released today Bishop Jarrett said:" Revd Father John Naylor died peacefully early this morning, 27th February 2012, fortified by the sacraments of Holy Church. He was 83 years of age, and in the 55th year of his Priesthood.
 
For some time now John had been resident at St Joseph’s Aged Care Facility in Lismore, and had been declining over the past week.
 
Walter John Naylor grew up in Melbourne. After education in public schools and at Whitefriars College, Donvale, he was ordained as a Carmelite priest in St Patrick’s Cathedral by Coadjutor Archbishop Justin Simonds on 28 July, 1957.
 
In 1962 he was incardinated in the Diocese of Lismore, and served variously as an assistant priest in Casino, Kyogle, Mullumbimby, Lismore and Coffs Harbour. He was Director of Propagation of the Faith in the diocese 1971-1977, and Parish Priest of Macksville 1977-1987.
 
Father John retired to Lismore in 1991, and is survived by a sister in Melbourne.
 
Father John’s Mass of Requiem will be celebrated next Wednesday at 10.00am in St Carthage’s Cathedral, Lismore, followed by interment in the Priests’ Section at the East Lismore Cemetery.
