Fr Michael Joseph McKenna will be ordained a Bishop – and installed as the Eighth Bishop of Bathurst – on 26th June 2009 It is over 89 years since the last ordination in Bathurst of a Bishop for the Diocese. The historic ceremony will begin at 11.00am in the Performing Arts Centre of St. Stanislaus’ College Bathurst. A large congregation is expected and approximately 250 people will have specific roles in the Liturgy through involvement in choirs, processions, readings etc. Consecrators will be Sydney’s Archbishop, His Eminence Cardinal George Pell; Bishop Emeritus of the Sale Diocese – the Most Rev Jeremiah Coffee; and the Most Rev Patrick Dougherty – Bishop Emeritus of the Bathurst Diocese. A further 21 Bishops and 115 priests from around Australia will concelebrate the Mass and the Apostolic Nuncio (Papal representative in Australia) His Excellency Giuseppe Lazarotto, will also be present. The Hon Bob Debus MP; Mr Gerard Martin MP and Mr Russell Turner MP will be attending, as will the Mayors of seven Local Councils within the Diocese. Heads of other faiths attending will include the Right Rev Richard Hurford and the Right Rev Peter Danaher (Anglican Church); Rev Garry Moore (Baptist Church); Rev Jonathon Inkpin (NSW Ecumenical Council) and Rev Graeme MacRaild (Macquarie/Darling Uniting Church). During the official reception at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre, the newly refurbished Bathurst City bells – housed at All Saints’ Anglican Cathedral – will ring for the first time, in honour of the occasion. Bell ringers travelling from Sydney will have the privilege of being the inaugural team to experience the new tower and its historic bells. Fr Michael McKenna is a priest of the Sale Diocese and has held various positions since his ordination in 1983, including two terms as Secretary General of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference. At the time of his appointment to Bathurst, he was Chaplain to the University of Melbourne and Administrator of All Saints’ Parish in Fitzroy.
